Krotophobia – Fear of Gunshot Noise

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

A Hunting Dog is needed for hunting game. We have asked ourselves many times what kind of game can really be hunted on this island. Nevertheless, many locals are passionate hunters, must be some genes left over since the cradle of mankind. Hunting Dogs are being kept, bred, sold in large numbers here. Many unwanted Hunting dogs are being produced as a consequence… Leon was supposed to become a fine Hunting Dog. When it was clear he had Krotophopia, he was locked in his little cage and a new puppy came. Leon barked, howled, cried for months, the neighbours suffered. They felt sorry for the poor animal, could not sleep at night. Finally the owner agreed to give the dog to BarBigs for rehoming. He needs to be socialized with other dogs, as his stay in solitary confinement has made him a bit ‘sudden’ towards other dogs that crowd him. He is a beautiful dog and we hope he can find a home soon.

Unwanted dog at Hotel Agnanti

Monday, July 28th, 2008

For the second time this year, an unwanted dog has saught shelter at Hotel Agnanti. We hope that the hotel management will be patient and wait until we can handle the frightened female. So far we have always tried to solve their problems as soon as possible. For sure the animal friendly hotel guests will be content to know that there will be a happy ending for the dog.

Gaynor, a dog owner, was cycling along in Kakapetra. She heard some noise from the garbage container. In a tied up plastic bag, she found 4 newborn puppies together with some leftover fish bones. What kind of ignorant barbarians would throw newborn puppies away in the garbage? And what barbarian would be so gross as to put the puppies in the same bag with leftovers from the dinner table? Were they supposed to feed on the leftovers before suffocating? Luckily, our cyclist had Barbaras phone number handy and called. Barbaras mother picked up the pups and animal lover Lydia from Athens, who spends the summer here, decided to give it a try and feed them with the bottle. Two of them have died already but the other two are still struggling to live.

On Friday, 18.7. Vet A. Lambrou found 2 dogs near his shop that almost caused a car accident. He called Barbara, who went to pick them up. It seemed most likely that they had owners. After 5 days they were picked up by the happy owners.

Thursday, July 24th, 2008

A family of four and a couple had contacted us to transport animals to Munich. Very nice people and very lucky dogs! See more about where our dogs go here. One week earlier, more dogs had been able to fly to their families with another couple.

One April evening in 2007 Barbara heard some strange barking outside. She went to check and then came back to Biggie, saying: ‘there is a dog tied to the electricty pole, it must be a BOXER!’ – that evenig Grinch joined us. She was not well, her skin looked horrible and so did her eyes. It was said that she had Leishmania, and for that reason her owner brought her here. It proved to be a bad case of Demodex and it took us long to get her well. Tests for Leishmania proved her to be negative. After 15 months, Grinch finally got a chance. We will keep you posted about her future in Germany….

Many Events, Days too short

The photos below illustrate some of the recent events. More details are soon to follow.

Weak female found in Drios

Sunday, July 13th, 2008

After partying on her birthday and going to bed late, Biggie got a phone call in the middle of the night. An animal lover from Gerrmany who visits Paros every year and who supports our work by transporting animals on her way home, had found a weak little female in the middle of the road in Drios. She was covered in ticks and had no strength left. Biggie went to pick the dog up right away. She is being treated with antibiotics now because we suspect that she was infected with Ehrlichiosis by the ticks.

Unwanted stray and unwanted owned

Friday, July 11th, 2008

BarBigs picked up 2 dogs on Thursday. One was a very nice, quiet unwanted stray that had been living in Aliki. Unfortunately, he loved the beach and loved cooling off in the sea. A local woman, working for the Electricity Company in Paroikia, could not stand seeing the dog taking a bath where the children play and swim – she threatened to get the stray killed. BarBigs were asked by an animal lover, for the safety of the dog, to pick him up. The other one supposedly killed some chicken and could not stay where he had been. Whether this was a pretext or the truth is not known. The only thing we know, is that we got 2 new dogs in 24 hours. But wait to see what happened after midnight….
