Goodbye from Barbara

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Dear friends of the Blog! Thank you for following the Blog and our work in the past. After years of passionate work and hundreds of entries in the Blog I resign. I resign from PAWS, I resign from the Blog. The ‘Golden Animal Friend Award’ is from a person in Germany who adopted a rescued dog a few years ago.  I thank all the supporters who helped us do this difficult work in the past.

Blind passengers

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

When PAWS members Walter and Ireanah found a frightened and skinny female hunting dog on their doorstep in Antiparos after Christmas, they did not know yet. They did not know that they would take this sweet female to Switzerland, that their daughter would adopt it and last but not least THEY DID NOT KNOW THAT VERY SOON THE DOG WOULD GIVE BIRTH TO 8 PUPPIES! The young couple is overwhelmed, as they are both working and have no time to raise such a big family. An animal welfare organisation in Switzerland has promised to help with finding homes for the little ones. The first pictures shows the finders, the puppy is one from PAWS that got to travel with them to its new family.

Nichta and Morena found in Paroikia

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

When a 15year old schoolgirl walked home from school last Saturday, the 2 puppies followed her home. Someone must have dumped them. The girl’s mother called PAWS – they could not possibly keep them. Barbara went to pick the sweet pups up and they will move to Tripiti today.

Not one white hair on them

Polyfima

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

PAWS was called yesterday about some puppies that had shown up at a Quarry some time ago. The man who called, said he was an animal lover and that he did not mind to keep them there. One of them had a popped out eye, though, and he would like us to take care of her if possible. He had only just discovered our leaflet, had not known that we exist. Barbara went to get the puppy. It is on antibiotics and the eye will have to be extracted in a few days.

Sweet little female, broken leg

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

This little female was found with a fractured front leg in Aliki. Has anybody lost her? No one has stepped forward yet. The little dog will travel to Germany quickly, her chances of getting proper treatment for her leg are much better there than on the island.

Monday, January 4th, 2010

On New Year’s Eve, PAWS got a phone call about a frightened dog that had got trapped in a small strip of land between the street and a home. When Barbara went to check out the situation the following day, she realized that there was no chance to get the dog easily. Today, after getting some tranquilizer from the vet, Matthias and Barbara went to get the dog. As it is the case very often with frightened dogs, the tranquilizer did not work at all. Luckily Claudia and Uli from the rehoming organisation Paroshunde in Germany had donated a Catching Pole to PAWS when they were here last fall. Unfortunately no one was there to take photos during the catching, as M&B had their hands absolutely full: try catching a dog, getting it in the box and all that 2 meters above the street level….. Luckily the female dog is safe and we hope that she will accept humans very soon.

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Holy DaysThe PAWS President got a phone call tonight. A man had seen these puppies dumped next to the garbage in Kakapetra 2 days ago but did not know how to find us……. He saw them again earlier today and they were still alive. He finally found the number and called about 7 p.m. How many people dumped their garbage in those 2 days and saw them? Who dumped them in the first place? 11 puppies, some very tiny but still alive after 2 days. You dog owners, do you think it is right to dispose of your puppies in this manner? Do you feel good when you look at yourself in the mirror?

Ο πρόεδρος του PAWS δέχτηκε σήμερα ένα τηλεφώνημα. Ένας άντρας είχε δει πριν από 2 ημέρες κάτι κουτάβια πεταμένα δίπλα από ένα σκουπιδοτενεκέ, στα Κακάπετρα. Δεν ήξερε όμως που να μας βρεί. Τα ξαναείδε νωρίτερα σήμερα και ήταν ακόμα ζωντανά. Τελικά κατάφερε και βρήκε το τηλέφωνό μας και μας πήρε κατα τις 7 μ.μ. Αναρωτιέμαι πόσοι ακόμα πέταξαν τα σκουπίδια τους σε εκείνο τον τενεκέ αυτές τις 2 ημέρες και τα είδαν… Ποιός τα πέταξε εκεί; 11 κουταβάκια, μικροσκπικά, πολύ αδύνατα, αλλά ακόμα ζωντανά μετά πό 2 μέρες. Ιδιοκτήτες σκύλων: νομίζετε ότι μπορείτε να πετάτε τα κουτάβια σας με αυτόν τον τρόπο; Νοιώθετε καλά όταν κοιτάζεστε στον καθρέφτη;

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Painting TripitiWe had decided to give the house in Tripiti a new coat of paint after Biggies departure and before Matthias’ moving in. Yesterday Bram and Stella were painting, today Bram, Matthias and Barbara all gave their best. Tomorrow the floor will be painted and hopefully Matthias can move in on Tuesday.

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Bye ParosFriday evening, Biggie, her dog Zippo, 3 cats that she adopted, 2 cats that she will rehome and 6 puppies who will be rehomed by the organisation Paroshunde in Germany and who were taken to Munich by our friend and biggest supporter Eibi left the island – after losing their original flights due to the strike. Luckily, they all left only about 12 hours later. Biggie flew to Brussels, a more economical choice when travelling with animals. She was picked up by her father and after a long and difficult drive due to a lot of snow she finally reached home.
