Holy Days – Άγιες ημέρες

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Holy DaysThe PAWS President got a phone call tonight. A man had seen these puppies dumped next to the garbage in Kakapetra 2 days ago but did not know how to find us……. He saw them again earlier today and they were still alive. He finally found the number and called about 7 p.m. How many people dumped their garbage in those 2 days and saw them? Who dumped them in the first place? 11 puppies, some very tiny but still alive after 2 days. You dog owners, do you think it is right to dispose of your puppies in this manner? Do you feel good when you look at yourself in the mirror?

Ο πρόεδρος του PAWS δέχτηκε σήμερα ένα τηλεφώνημα. Ένας άντρας είχε δει πριν από 2 ημέρες κάτι κουτάβια πεταμένα δίπλα από ένα σκουπιδοτενεκέ, στα Κακάπετρα. Δεν ήξερε όμως που να μας βρεί. Τα ξαναείδε νωρίτερα σήμερα και ήταν ακόμα ζωντανά. Τελικά κατάφερε και βρήκε το τηλέφωνό μας και μας πήρε κατα τις 7 μ.μ. Αναρωτιέμαι πόσοι ακόμα πέταξαν τα σκουπίδια τους σε εκείνο τον τενεκέ αυτές τις 2 ημέρες και τα είδαν… Ποιός τα πέταξε εκεί; 11 κουταβάκια, μικροσκπικά, πολύ αδύνατα, αλλά ακόμα ζωντανά μετά πό 2 μέρες. Ιδιοκτήτες σκύλων: νομίζετε ότι μπορείτε να πετάτε τα κουτάβια σας με αυτόν τον τρόπο; Νοιώθετε καλά όταν κοιτάζεστε στον καθρέφτη;

Puppies deposited outside of Alkioni – Κουτάβια παράτησαν έξω από την «Αλκυόνη»

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Born to dieFour newborn puppies were left outside Alkioni. They must have been lying there all night, hungry and cold. When they were finally picked up and taken to us, they were icy cold and almost dead. You, dog owners, neuter your females and stop practicing this brutal breeding of unwanted offspring!

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

2 monthsOn June 13th, Barbara got a phone call about a big frightened male dog on a construction site in Kakapetra. Could we remove the dog?
Barbara went right away to look for it and realized that it was the same male that had spent the winter in Dassos, had been shot at by a farmer, survived and sought shelter in Kakapetra. He had never been touched or caressed by any person, probably – some had tried but not succeeded. Even though Barbara was very busy, she went every day to feed and spend some time with the dog. She would call him, as soon as she got there: “Hello my friend, where are you?…” and he would come running, wagging his tail. Very soon he let Barbara touch him lightly, let her put a collar on him. But with every sudden movement, he would jump. Barbara had a lot of respect because of his size and his fear and did not know how to handle him, could not just lift him in her car. He had never been lifted up before and could very well bite in a situation like that. Therefore she had discussed the situation with the dog trainer. They were trying to find a slot in their busy schedules to go and see the dog together, to try and decide how to remove him from the place. In the mean time, some people were fed up with the dog staying there. A worker called the dog trainer and warned her that the dog might get killed if he was not taken away soon. Think about it: this was after Barbara had been seeing the dog for 2 months, daily. He had been waiting for her for 2 months every evening, neighbours witnessed that, they noticed him waiting for her car. But – ever since the phone call the dog has disappeared. What kind of coincidence is this? Barbara has cried bitterly and is very sorry that she did not act before it was too late. Why does it seem to be an acceptable solution for some people to kill an animal like him just because he is in the way and he pees on some tiles in a construction site?

Hello my friend

I lost a friend

This photograph was taken only a few hours before Big Male died

I lost a friend yesterday.
We had only known each other since last autumn.
I didn’t even know his name.
I used to call him Big male.
We met when he was tied up in the ruin of an old stable.
He wasn’t alone, there was Female and another male, Small male.
They were all three tied up, Small male deep in the ruin, Female on the outside in the yard..
Small male hardly saw daylight those days.
They were skinny or maybe skin and bones is a better description.
Living in their own, blood mixed, excrement
I started feeding them when around Christmas there seemed no food to be given to them at all.
One day I missed all three, they had apparently been removed.
A few days later I found out they were tied to some old trucks in the middle of the field.
I kept on bringing food every day and slowly all three got some fat on the bones.
Maybe I fed them too much, not accounting for the complete lack of exercise.
We had a bond the four of us.
They greeted me every morning on my tour with my dogs to feed my three friends.
Big male used to jump high with all four as soon as I got near.
I fed them and cuddled them for a while before leaving them alone for their long boring day and night.
When the rain started we put up three shelters so at least they could sleep in a dry place and hide for the rain and the cold wind.
The three of them managed with ups and downs till last Sunday morning.
Big male didn’t want to eat and remained lying next to his shelter.
The next morning his collar, still on the chain was empty.
I thought he might have run from his prison but a moment later I saw him lying under the old truck.
He looked at me as if telling me the end was coming.
But not chained as a prisoner but free staying close to his friends.
When I came back in the afternoon Big male had left us.

I took his body and cared for it leaving Female and Small male with their life sentence.
They have done nothing wrong but having been given to the wrong person.

I thank you for reading my story and do hope you will help me fighting this horrible abusive behaviour of some of our fellow men.
Bram.

Bon Voyage

They traveled 800km to get this dog

On Sunday, April 12th, Barbara, a friend and seven dogs left Paros by car. They travelled via Patras-Venice to Munich, where they arrived 55 hours later. Most of the dogs were puppies around six months old, that had been abandonned in different places on the island. For one of these puppies, a German family travelled 400 km and back to come and pick it up this Tuesday in Munich! A puppy that only two months earlier had been left on a parking lot in Paroikia with five others. Four of the dogs that made the journey are already with their families, only three are still waiting for rehoming with foster families. We wish them all a very happy dog life!
For the return trip, the car was loaded to the top with transport boxes used to transport dogs by plane. These boxes end up after the flights in Germany, are very expensive and need to be brought back to Paros regularly.
To help avoiding special trips like this one please help us when you travel: consider transporting a dog when you travel to Germany or boxes, when you come back to Paros. For information or details call 6976 322 076

Noon in the Port of Paroikia

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

The little dog that was picked up in the port of Paroikia in a horrible condition could be the Mascot of PAWS for some advertisement and fundraising campaigns in 2009. Therefore we suggest to name her Pawsy.

Barbara picked up two little dogs today noon in Paroikia. The pictures of the female can be seen here.

Did she belong to someone?

And if yes, should she really be given back?

The Canine Condition

I am a stray dog in Greece

Following the infamous circular of vice-minister Kiltidis, this photo has been going around in the Internet

I am a stray dog in Greece

I do not have rights for:
– health treatment
– food and water in public places
– to be adopted abroad and become part of a family

I have the right to:
– die in the streets of Greece
– to be poisoned in Greece
– to suffer till death tied to some chain

Thank you Mr. Kiltidis* for protecting me and providing me with those rights!

* Mr Kiltidis is the vice-minister of Agricultural development, (oddly) in charge as well of pets and strays.
Not only the ministry has been usually ignoring the issue of stray and abused animals, but it looks like it wants now to restrict rehoming unwanted dogs from Greece in other countries of Europe, with the (surrealistic) justification that it is protecting them from a possible trafficking. So much ignorance is just astounding!.

Reincarnation

The washing machine does not make a great house

The washing machine does not make a great house

Do you believe in reincarnation? Better pray for not ever being reincarnated as a dog in Paros belonging to somebody. You might end up at the end of a one-meter-chain with the frame of an old washing machine as a shelter. As a little chain-dog without any shelter at all, only a bush, which in summer works against the sun, but not really in winter against the rain. Or as a so-called hunting dog, which is being kept underweight so as to be a better hunter. These cases were visited today by PAWS and we will try to persuade their owners to  improve the situation of their dogs. Any dogs in your neighbourhood without any shelter now in winter? Talk to the owners in a polite way and offer your help! Go back to see whether the situation has improved. By shouting, very often we do not really improve the long-term situation of a dog. Diplomacy helps change things.

Christmas Surprise – Wilder than Wild West

Friday, December 26th, 2008

img_2837Where are we? We have learned to deal with throwaway live animals. What a surprise to find a dead sheep disposed next to the garbage on Christmas Day. Is there really no other way to dispose of animals that for some reason have ceased to be of USE? Too much work I guess.
